Cheap Household Staple for Sparkling Kitchen Cabinets and Worktops
Cheap Staple for Sparkling Kitchen Surfaces

Kitchen cabinets and worktops can be kept cleaner with a cheap staple that everyone owns, according to a cleaning expert. Lynsey Crombie, known as the Queen of Clean online, has shared a simple method to remove grease and grime using washing-up liquid, an item already found in most homes.

Why Kitchens Get Greasy Quickly

Kitchens are often the most frustrating rooms to keep clean. Despite frequent wiping, surfaces can appear dirty within 24 hours. This happens because food splatters during cooking, and airborne oils from frying or sautéing break down into tiny droplets carried by steam. These oils settle on cupboards and worktops, creating a tacky layer that traps bacteria and increases contamination risk.

The Simple Solution

Lynsey explained: "I am constantly asked how I keep my high gloss kitchen cabinets clean, shiny and streak-free. To remove grease, grime, food splashes and finger marks, I start by cleaning with warm water and washing up liquid. Washing up liquid is a degreaser, so it is the perfect product to use."

Washing-up liquid works effectively because it contains surfactants that break down oil, allowing it to mix with water. Many cleaning products struggle with grease since oil repels water, but this household staple loosens marks without scrubbing.

How to Deep Clean Kitchen Surfaces

To begin, add a few squirts of washing-up liquid to a bowl of warm water. Avoid using too much, as it can leave a soapy film. Dip a cloth into the solution, wring it out thoroughly, and wipe surfaces using a circular motion. Focus on areas where grease accumulates, such as cabinet handles, areas near the hob, and the backs of worktops.

For stubborn residue, place the damp cloth on the mark for 30 seconds before wiping. Then, use a second cloth rinsed in warm water to remove any soap residue, and dry with a third cloth. This process takes about five minutes and leaves kitchens spotlessly clean and mark-free.
