Cat owners often chuckle when their feline friends raise their bottoms during a petting session, but experts say this behaviour is actually a sign of deep affection and trust. Known as the 'elevator butt', the gesture is a way for cats to communicate that they feel safe and relaxed with their owners.
According to a viral video, when a cat lifts its rear end, it is presenting the scent glands at the base of its tail. In cat language, this is a friendly greeting and a sign of affection, similar to saying 'I like you' and 'I trust you'. Mother cats do this with their kittens, and cats do it with other cats they like. When a cat does it with a human, it is treating them like family.
Dr. Joanna Woodnutt, MRCVS, founder of Petlearnia, explains that the behaviour is more common in female cats, especially those that had seasons before being spayed. She notes that accidental reinforcement may play a role: when cats stick their bums up and owners stroke them harder, they are more likely to repeat the behaviour. Some cats also enjoy the squealing reaction they get from humans.
So next time your cat presents its 'elevator butt', take it as a compliment. It means your cat feels completely at ease with you and considers you part of its inner circle.
