Best Time of Day for Bowel Movements, Doctors Say

Doctors have revealed the best time of day for that essential bathroom break, emphasizing that while consistency matters most, morning hours offer distinct physiological advantages. Gastroenterologists say a 'normal' frequency ranges from three times a week to twice daily, but the body's internal clock makes the period after waking most efficient.

Why Morning is Ideal

Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, a South Carolina-based gastroenterologist, told EatingWell that our body functions on a rhythm aligned with the sun. A rhythmic gut prevents issues like chronic constipation or irritable bowel syndrome. Dr. Kenneth Brown, a gastroenterologist in Plano, Texas, highlighted three factors: circadian rhythms, which make the colon most active in the morning; a natural rise in cortisol that stimulates bowels; and overnight accumulation, as the colon fills during sleep and resumes activity upon waking.

The Gastrocolic Reflex

Morning also coincides with the peak of the gastrocolic reflex, which causes colon contractions after eating or drinking, especially after the first glass of water or breakfast. Physical activity and diet also play key roles. Exercise stimulates motility, while dehydration can lead to harder stools.

Disruptions and Routine

Travel, stress, medical conditions like hypothyroidism or diabetes, medications such as opioids, and changes during pregnancy or aging can alter stool frequency. To establish a routine, experts suggest sitting on the toilet for five minutes consistently after breakfast and morning coffee. A daily intake of 25 to 30 grams of fiber and at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise support gut motility.

Bulsiewicz noted that daily movements are a common goal, but 'adequate regularity' and complete emptying are more important than rigid frequency. Consult a healthcare provider if bowel habits change suddenly or if constipation and diarrhea persist for more than two weeks.
