Alison Hammond's Remarkable Health Transformation: Shedding 11 Stone and Reversing Pre-Diabetes
Over the past five years, television personality Alison Hammond has undergone a dramatic lifestyle overhaul, resulting in an impressive weight loss of approximately 11 stone. At her heaviest, the This Morning presenter weighed 30 stone before receiving a pre-diabetes health warning that served as a pivotal moment for change. The diagnosis, coupled with concerns from her late mother Maria, who herself had type 2 diabetes, motivated Alison to pursue a healthier path.
A Sustainable Approach to Weight Loss
Alison has consistently emphasised that her transformation did not involve extreme dieting or deprivation. Instead, she focused on moderation and sustainable habits, refusing to cut out any food groups entirely. "I don't deny myself anything, I eat everything, but in moderation," she explained. This balanced approach allowed her to enjoy foods like a Full English breakfast, Caribbean lunches, and homemade dinners while still achieving significant results.
Her typical day begins with an immunity-boosting ginger shot, followed by a hearty breakfast with her son Aiden. Lunch might consist of rice, peas, and chicken on studio days, or homemade lasagne when at home. For dinner, she often prepares curried goat and rice or chicken fried rice. Alison also enjoys occasional glamorous nights out, citing Elton John's 2019 Oscars party as a highlight.
Fitness Focus: Resistance Training and Consistency
Central to Alison's transformation has been a dedicated fitness regimen designed by her personal trainer, Lui Mancini. Resistance training formed the cornerstone of her routine, with workout splits targeting different muscle groups to maximise effectiveness and allow for proper recovery. "We kept the intensity high in every session by lifting weights that challenged her and minimising rest," Lui revealed.
Alison's workouts typically start with a 10-minute warm-up on the treadmill or indoor bike, followed by a 30-minute upper-body strength session. This includes lat pulldowns, dumbbell rows, seated shoulder presses, and dumbbell lateral raises, performed in three sets with strategic weight and repetition adjustments. She trains a minimum of twice weekly, increasing to four sessions depending on her schedule and energy levels.
Overcoming Challenges and Inspiring Others
Alison's journey has not been without challenges. She previously admitted to feeling "so embarrassed" by her weight when she exceeded 20 stone, leading her to join Weight Watchers in 2019. Despite daily trolling about her size, she refuses to slim down for others, stating she likes taking up "a little bit of extra space in the world."
She has also been open about her decision to avoid weight loss jabs due to fear of "scary" stories, though she respects their use for others who need them. Her mother's death from lung and liver cancer in January 2020 further reinforced her commitment to health. "My mum had type 2 diabetes and she was worried for me, so when I then found out that I was pre-diabetic, that was frightening," Alison shared.
Living Life to the Fullest
Today, Alison incorporates walking, stretching, and yoga into her routine alongside her strength training. She acknowledges the importance of health while maintaining a positive outlook, telling Lorraine Kelly, "we're all going to die eventually," and vowing to live life to the "fullest." Her sunny disposition and candidness about her struggles aim to empower others. "I want my journey to empower others to think about making changes to their lifestyle to become the best version of themselves," she said.
Through consistency, moderation, and a focus on sustainable habits, Alison Hammond has not only lost 11 stone but successfully reversed her pre-diabetes diagnosis, proving that transformative health changes are achievable without extreme measures.
