A cleaning expert has shared a no-scrubbing method for removing mould and mildew from shower grout, using just toilet roll and a mould spray. The trick, demonstrated in a TikTok video by user @sisterpledgecleans, involves saturating toilet paper with product and leaving it on the affected area overnight.
How the 50p mould removal trick works
In the video, the cleaner sprays the grouting with Astonish's mould and mildew spray before covering the area with toilet paper. She explains: "Use this hack to remove mould and mildew from your grouting. Stick toilet roll to the grouting and saturate with product to make it stick. Leave it overnight then remove."
She then reveals the same strip of silicone with roughly 90% less mould and mildew than before she began. With one roll of toilet roll costing around 20-50p, the method is cost-effective.

Reacting to the video, one user said: "Love this, thank you." Another added: "I used Domestos last night and left it with tissue all night, it worked. I would say 80% it works." A third commented: "I used Domestos bleach and it worked," while another said: "Very good."
The trick has also been praised on Reddit, where a homeowner on the DIYUK forum posted a picture of mouldy grout asking for advice. One user responded: "The best solution I've found is to get some wet toilet paper, press it up to the affected area and soak it in bleach. Leave it for 24 hours and check it. Won't be perfect and may need a few rounds but it's either that or replace the silicone."
Another commenter backed the advice: "This 100% Had great results in our bathroom." A third shared: "This might be worth a try before you replace it. I did this in my flat and it killed off all the mould and looked brand new. Just repeated the process about a year later when it started getting bad again."
Why removing mould from grout matters
Mould should be removed from shower grout to protect health, prevent permanent structural damage to the bathroom, and stop foul odours from developing. Because grout is highly porous, it easily traps moisture, soap scum, and skin cells, creating an ideal breeding ground for fungi like black mould.
Mould releases microscopic spores into the air, which thrive in the warm, humid environment of a bathroom. Inhaling or coming into contact with these spores can trigger respiratory issues, aggravate asthma, cause allergic reactions, and irritate the eyes, nose, and throat.
