Experts at Santa Cruz Appliance Repair explain that leaving the washing machine door slightly open after each cycle allows air to circulate, drying out moisture. This simple habit is the most effective way to prevent mould, as mould thrives in damp, dark environments like the drum and rubber seal.
In addition to leaving the door and detergent drawer open, wiping down the rubber gasket seal weekly with white vinegar can kill spores naturally. White vinegar is a highly acidic substance that tackles mould without harsh chemicals. Simply apply it to a cloth, wipe the seals, and dry thoroughly.
Running a hot water cycle with an empty drum once a month also helps. Add a few tablespoons of white vinegar to the detergent drawer and run a 90C or 60C cycle. High temperatures kill lingering mould spores, leaving the machine clean.
