In a significant development for Britain's public health strategy, health officials have confirmed plans to roll out a single combined vaccine protecting against both COVID-19 and seasonal flu from autumn 2025.
Streamlined Protection for Millions
The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has endorsed the approach, which will see millions of eligible individuals receive dual protection through a single injection. This strategic move aims to simplify the vaccination process while maintaining robust defences against respiratory illnesses.
Building on Scientific Advances
Professor Adam Finn, a prominent JCVI member, highlighted how mRNA technology developed during the pandemic has made this combined approach feasible. "The science has advanced to the point where we can effectively protect against multiple viruses in one vaccine," he explained.
The initiative represents a major step toward integrating COVID-19 protection into routine seasonal vaccination programmes, similar to how influenza is managed annually.
Who Will Benefit?
While specific eligibility criteria are still being finalised, the combined vaccine is expected to target similar groups currently qualifying for separate COVID-19 boosters and flu jabs. This typically includes:
- Adults over 65
- Those with underlying health conditions
- Frontline health and social care workers
- Pregnant women

Professor Sir Andrew Pollard, former chair of the JCVI, emphasised the practical benefits: "Combining these vaccinations will reduce complexity for both patients and healthcare providers while ensuring comprehensive protection."
The move is expected to ease pressure on GP practices and vaccination centres while potentially increasing uptake by simplifying the process for vulnerable groups.
