Earl Charles Spencer's controversial book "Swan Song: Diana, My Sister" has topped The Sunday Times Bestsellers List, selling 102,670 copies in its first week. The book, released last week, has made headlines ever since.
Book tops bestsellers despite backlash
The book ranked first place, a result that may surprise many given the criticism it has faced. As well as celebrating the late Princess Diana's life, which was tragically cut short after her 1997 death following a car crash in Paris, it contained damaging accusations about members of the Royal Family.
This included accusations that King Charles, who was Prince Charles at the time, acted like a "lottery winner" after his ex-wife's death. He was also accused of saying the world will forget about the mother of his two sons "soon enough".
Royal response and public reaction
Buckingham Palace released a statement in response, acknowledging how grief can "cloud" memory. Despite this, Earl Spencer has claimed it is the truth.
This angered royal fans, with many stepping up to defend the King online. The book also angered Piers Morgan, who is reportedly suing The Earl for claiming Piers was responsible for photographs of Diana in the gym being published in The Mirror. This was not the case, as Piers worked at The Sun at the time.
Earl's interviews and family reaction
The Earl has done many interviews since the book hit the shelves last week, including in the UK and in America. He has claimed that he informed both his nephews, Diana's sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, about the book on the same day the rest of the world also found out.
He also suggested that Harry was "fine" about the book but wanted to check it had nothing embarrassing about him in it. It is not clear what Prince William's reaction was. However, sources have claimed that William is "furious" about his uncle's book and the accusations in it.
