A country estate has been exposed as a major hub for the illicit production of weight loss drugs, following the UK's largest ever seizure of illegal injections. Two men, both aged 29, were arrested in connection with the operation.
Details of the Raid
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), assisted by Northamptonshire Police, conducted a raid on a property near Northampton on Thursday night. Inside, officers discovered approximately 12,000 doses of unlicensed weight loss medicines, along with substantial quantities of packaging materials and what are believed to be pharmaceutical substances used in the illicit manufacture of these products.
Products Found
The MHRA stated that the estate was likely used to manufacture, assemble, and distribute unlicensed weight loss medicines, including retatrutide and tirzepatide, as well as peptide products. Tirzepatide is commonly found in popular Mounjaro injections, while retatrutide is a more experimental drug still undergoing clinical trials.
This seizure marks the largest of its kind for the agency. Images from the scene depict dozens of cardboard boxes and containers filled with injections scattered across disorganised rooms.
Legal Action
Both men were arrested on suspicion of offences under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012. Andy Morling, head of the MHRA's criminal enforcement unit, commented: 'Last night's hugely successful operation demonstrates, once again, the MHRA's unwavering commitment to ensuring there is no hiding place for those who cynically put the public's health at risk for profit.' He added that dismantling this illicit production facility will have prevented significant public harm.
