The new orders, primarily affecting staff, patients, and visitors in hospitals and clinics, come as the state grapples with the rapid spread of new JN.1 subvariants and the aftermath of holiday season social mixing.
A Statewide Response to Rising Numbers
From the San Francisco Bay Area to Los Angeles County, medical centres are posting renewed signage and enforcing strict masking rules. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued a directive in early January requiring healthcare workers to wear masks in patient care areas, a move many individual counties had already taken.
"We are seeing a very substantial increase… this is among the fastest increase in cases that we've seen during the whole pandemic," warned Dr. Thomas Peacock, a virologist, highlighting the ferocity of the current wave.
JN.1 Variant Fuels the Surge

"If you haven't received it, you should get it now," one official stated bluntly, underscoring that the latest jab is the best defence against the evolving virus. The call to action targets vulnerable populations in particular, including the elderly and those with compromised immune systems.
