A coroner has ruled that a 26-year-old mother of three died after undergoing a Brazilian butt lift procedure in Turkey without giving informed consent. Demi Agoglia, from Bolton, travelled to Istanbul for the surgery at Comfort Zone Surgery after seeing celebrity endorsements on social media.
The inquest heard that Agoglia's partner, Bradley Jones, had not wanted her to have the operation, but she had booked it months earlier. After the procedure, she complained of a tight chest and was shaking. Staff from the clinic visited her villa but did not inspect the operation site or check her heart rate and pulse. They later tried to feed her pieces of cucumber after she collapsed.
Agoglia was taken back to a hospital in Istanbul, where she died on 8 January, three days after the surgery. The medical cause of death was a microscopic fat embolism. The coroner, John Pollard, ruled that her death was misadventure contributed to by neglect, stating there was no proper informed consent, pre-operative care, or post-operative care.
Dr Omar Tillo, a Harley Street plastic surgeon, told the inquest that the lack of proper care likely played a significant role in her death. The coroner said he would write to the health secretary, Wes Streeting, calling for action to stop such 'frankly barbaric' practices. The Turkish hospital and surgeons did not respond to requests for statements.
