Gemma Numan, wife of synth-pop icon Gary Numan, has been hospitalised in London for a spinal procedure ahead of major surgery. The 57-year-old mother of three shared a photo from her hospital bed on Instagram, revealing she had undergone treatment to alleviate nerve compression and inflammation.
Gemma explained that the procedure provided eight months of relief last year, but her neck pain and migraines have returned. She hopes the latest treatment will help her get through the next few months before she undergoes surgery to remove and replace five cervical discs after her husband's tour.
In addition to her spinal issues, Gemma has been diagnosed with nutcracker syndrome, a vascular disorder causing compression of the left renal vein. She will require a kidney autotransplantation in Los Angeles, a rare and major surgery to reposition her kidney. She also has May-Thurner syndrome and pelvic congestion syndrome, which she believes may have contributed to a mini stroke she suffered last year.
Gemma described herself as 'a broken nightmare' but remains hopeful that the surgeries will improve her quality of life. Garbage singer Shirley Manson sent her support, saying, 'You deserve a life free of pain. Sending love love love.'
