A doctor has tragically died after being thrown from a horse during a riding lesson, with her young daughter watching in horror. Mother-of-two Donatella Mecchia suffered a fatal head injury when she was thrown from her horse at a local equestrian centre. Her teenage daughter, Aurora, witnessed the incident helplessly as her mother sustained a cerebral haemorrhage.
Fatal Accident
The 46-year-old was rushed to the intensive care neurological unit at Niguarda Hospital in Milan, Italy, on the morning of Friday, June 5. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, Donatella, a respected doctor, died shortly before 10am on the same day.
Donatella Mecchia, originally from San Vito al Tagliamento but long-based in the Milan area, graduated in medicine and surgery and specialised in pathological anatomy at the University of Milan. She held senior clinical and research roles and was a highly-regarded physician specialising in aesthetic medicine.
A Life of Dedication
Colleagues remembered her as a dedicated teacher and warm personality whose 'contagious sympathy' and joy of living left a lasting impression. The Italian Society of Aesthetic Medicine paid tribute to her as a 'highly appreciated and recognised professional'.
In a final act of generosity, Donatella donated her organs, giving five people the chance of new life. Her body was taken to the Meda Funeral Home in Corbetta near Milan, where a farewell ceremony was held.
Tributes
The tragedy has devastated her husband, Marco Di Carlo, daughters Aurora and Beatrice, siblings Cristina and Alessandro, and her parents. Family members described Donatella as a strong, generous woman who was deeply devoted to her loved ones.
In a heartfelt tribute, Marco Ballarini, the Mayor of Corbetta, said: 'Former medical director of our nursing home and a doctor at the clinics on Via Villoresi, she always worked for our community. Even after her accident, she wanted to help others by donating her organs and saving 5 lives! On behalf of the entire City of Corbetta, I express my deepest and most heartfelt condolences to her entire family.'
Donatella's daughter Aurora commented: 'Hi Mom, these words demonstrate how precious and special you were, capable of bringing joy to the lives of everyone you met. The affection and respect everyone continues to express for you are proof of how much love you gave and how much you left in people's hearts. Your smile, your kindness, and your energy will forever remain a wonderful memory. You were a light to so many, and you will be immensely missed by all who were fortunate enough to know you.'
