UKRI's Decade of Investment in Physics Research Fuels Quantum Computing Success
In a robust defence of the United Kingdom's strategic approach to quantum computing, Professor Charlotte Deane of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has highlighted the critical role of sustained public investment in securing the nation's advantageous position in this cutting-edge field. Responding to concerns about talent retention, Deane emphasises that the UK's leadership is a direct result of long-term funding commitments from UKRI and its partners, which have focused on fundamental physics research, infrastructure, and human capital.
Building a Foundation Through Strategic Funding
Over the past ten years, UKRI's various councils have made significant investments in physics research, supporting hundreds of academics and laying the groundwork for current advancements. This foundational support includes initiatives such as the launch of 100 PhDs in quantum technology in 2024, industrial doctorate awards in quantum computing, and funding for 14 early-career fellows within the last 18 months. These efforts are designed to cultivate a skilled workforce and foster innovation from the ground up.
Record Investment Levels and Future Prospects
The investment is already yielding tangible results, with recent showcases revealing a dynamic quantum sector capable of creating up to 100,000 jobs over the next two decades. Looking ahead, UKRI plans to invest over £1 billion in the coming four years, complemented by a further £1 billion procurement programme from the government. These record levels of funding establish the UK as one of the most exciting and well-supported environments globally for quantum computing researchers, companies, and students.
Professor Deane asserts that this sustained commitment ensures the UK is poised to reap the benefits of the quantum revolution, countering claims that investment plans might jeopardise talent. Instead, she argues, the strategic focus on people and science has solidified the nation's role as a leader in this transformative technology.
