The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola continues to pose a 'very high risk' in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo), driven by ongoing conflict, displacement, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure.
Conflict Fuels Ebola Spread
According to WHO, the outbreak is expanding into new health zones, increasing the potential for national and regional spread. The health body stated: 'The risk in the Democratic Republic of the Congo remains assessed as very high due to ongoing transmission and the continued expansion of the outbreak into new health zones.'
The ongoing conflict between the national army and rebel groups is a central factor. People are forced to move frequently to avoid violence, disrupting access to food, clean water, and healthcare. Crowded camps for internally displaced people create conditions that facilitate virus transmission.
Healthcare and Burial Challenges
WHO highlighted that security incidents affecting health facilities have restricted access for response teams and disrupted surveillance. Inadequate infection prevention and control measures in healthcare settings, along with unsafe burial practices involving direct contact with deceased persons, amplify transmission.
The report noted: 'Transmission is particularly amplified in health-care settings when IPC measures are inadequate and during unsafe burial practices involving direct contact with deceased persons.'
Testing and Mortality
WHO also emphasized that rapid recognition of cases, testing, and optimized supportive care can reduce mortality. Increased testing has contributed to higher reported infection rates, but improved community perceptions and acceptance of healthcare are crucial for an effective response.
While the Bundibugyo strain has been brought under control in Uganda, the situation in DR Congo remains critical. The WHO continues to monitor the outbreak closely, urging enhanced measures to contain the virus.
