UK Smoking Ban for Young Generations Expected by Spring 2025
UK Smoking Ban for Young Generations by Spring 2025

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has outlined the government's timeline for implementing a ban on smoking for young generations, expressing hope that the measure will come into force around springtime next year.

Timeline and Legislative Process

During a press conference, Starmer stated that the government can act swiftly. He highlighted that powers were taken earlier this year to ensure rapid progress. Reflecting on the previous administration's handling of the Online Safety Act, which took eight years from identifying the issue to passing legislation, Starmer emphasized his determination to avoid such delays.

The Prime Minister confirmed that existing legislation grants ministers the authority to proceed via secondary legislation. He said: "We hope to pass regulation before Christmas, and therefore to bring the ban into force in the early part of next year, probably about springtime, so we can move at real pace here."

The ban is part of a broader public health initiative aimed at creating a smoke-free generation, reducing the burden on the NHS, and improving overall health outcomes. Further details on the scope and enforcement of the ban are expected in the coming months.
