A woman was airlifted to hospital after becoming unconscious on the same Welsh beach where a man died just hours before. The incident occurred at Aberavon Beach on Thursday, the hottest day of the year so far, with temperatures reaching record highs.
At around 5pm on Thursday, the RNLI worked alongside the coastguard and Welsh Ambulance Service after receiving reports that a woman had fallen unconscious. The coastguard helicopter transferred the woman to hospital for further treatment.
Around 24 hours earlier, on Wednesday afternoon, police and paramedics were called to the same beach for a man suffering a medical incident. An air ambulance landed, but despite efforts, a 50-year-old man from Neath died at the scene.
RNLI Response and Public Cooperation
An RNLI spokesperson said: 'Our team was tasked to an unconscious female at Aberafan Beach. Working alongside the RNLI Lifeguards, the casualty was stabilised and continuously monitored until the arrival of the Welsh Ambulance Service. Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 387 then landed on the beach to airlift the casualty to hospital for further treatment.'
The spokesperson added: 'We would like to wish the casualty a full and speedy recovery. We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the members of the public for their assistance and cooperation while the helicopter was landing.'
Record Heat and School Closures
Wales recorded its hottest June day on record and the highest temperature of the year so far on Thursday, according to the Met Office. Over 700 schools were closed due to the 'extreme weather event.' Friday is set to be another hot day, but will be cooler from then onwards.
Public Health Advice
Public Health Wales has urged people across Wales to stay safe and check on family, friends and neighbours. They reminded the public to follow water safety advice including not swimming alone, avoiding jumping into open water, supervising children, choosing lifeguarded locations, avoiding alcohol, and following 'Float to Live' advice.
