A building at the Royal Liverpool Hospital was evacuated on Tuesday night after a chemical leak. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) crews were called to the hospital at 7.14pm on Tuesday evening (August 25) following reports of a gas leak.
Fire crews respond to the scene
Three fire engines arrived at the scene in Liverpool city centre shortly afterwards. When the ECHO arrived, two fire engines were parked on Mount Vernon Road with fire crews gathered nearby. A fire alarm could also be heard sounding.
MFRS later confirmed the incident was a chemical leak in the Clinical Science and Support Building, with firefighters working to close the containers and ventilate the affected compartment.
Building declared safe
A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: “Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service is currently in attendance at an incident at the Royal Liverpool Hospital.
“Crews were alerted at 7.14pm following reports of a gas leak and three fire engines arrived on scene shortly after.
“The building has been evacuated as a precaution and firefighters are working closely with hospital staff and partners to investigate the scene.
"The incident has now been confirmed as a chemical leak in the Clinical Science and Support Building.
"Firefighters are working to close the containers and ventilate the affected compartment."
In an update at 7.45am this morning (Wednesday, August 26), the fire service said the building had been declared safe. Crews left the scene after putting out a fire in a separate part of the hospital.
Fire at A&E entrance
A spokesperson said: "By 11.26pm the building had returned to safe working levels. Fire crews remained on scene temporarily to check all floors.
"Prior to leaving, one crew attended a bin fire at the entrance of the A&E department. One hose reel jet was used to extinguish the fire.
"The crew left the scene at 12.30am."
