Lidl haul: 4 items to stop mindless snacking, coach says

Fitness coach Sam Slack has shared the four items he regularly buys from Lidl to help him stay on track with his healthy eating goals and avoid reaching for processed junk. His advice focuses on more "nutrient-packed" foods that keep you fuller for longer.

Four items to add to your basket

In a TikTok video, Sam outlined four categories of products he prefers to include in his shopping basket, stressing it's just "some stuff" he relies on to keep him fuelled. He visits Lidl roughly two or three times each week to keep his cupboards and fridge well stocked, explaining that "fresh fruit does go off really quickly".

The first category is steak, with Sam picking up grass-fed sirloin, rump and rib-eye. He noted that he doesn't always buy sirloin or rib-eye, perhaps "maybe once a week". He also gets grass-fed beef mince, choosing 5% fat, though he said 10% or 20% options are available.

Eggs and fresh fruit for grazing

Sam added organic eggs to his list, saying he does get farm-fresh eggs, "but if you can't get them from the farm, then these Purely Organics are pretty good". The remaining items are fresh fruits: avocados and pineapple, which he described as "great", plus raspberries, strawberries and blueberries. He tries to "get organic, but not always".

He also picks up kiwi, mango and banana. In the video's caption, he wrote: "If you don't have fresh fruit in the house, you'll snack on processed junk." He shared another tip: "I also like to shop myself rather than getting it delivered. That way, I can pick the fruit and meat that has a good use-by date."

Practical advice and balanced diet guidance

Sam offered some practical wisdom, saying: "Do what you can do. You don't have to be perfect. It's what works for you." His four recommended items are grass-fed steak, 5% fat beef mince, eggs as a protein source, and fresh fruit for grazing instead of snacking.

For a healthy, balanced diet, the NHS Eatwell Guide advises eating at least five portions of a variety of fruits and vegetables every day, basing meals on higher fibre starchy foods, having some dairy or alternatives, eating beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat and other protein, choosing unsaturated oils in small amounts, and drinking plenty of fluids (at least 6 to 8 glasses a day). Foods and drinks high in fat, salt and sugar should be consumed less frequently and in smaller quantities. Anyone having difficulties with their diet is advised to arrange an appointment with their GP.
