Pharmacist Raj Patel has issued a warning to anyone with high cholesterol, a condition that often shows no symptoms. With over 35 years of experience, he shared his guidance on TikTok, where he has nearly 100,000 followers.
Silent Damage to Arteries
Patel explained that high cholesterol could be damaging arteries without any noticeable signs. He described LDL, often called "bad cholesterol," as yellow particles that carry cholesterol through the bloodstream. While the body needs cholesterol, too many LDL particles can become trapped inside the artery wall.
Over time, this fatty substance can accumulate, forming a plaque deposit—a condition known as atherosclerosis. As the plaque grows, the artery opening narrows, reducing blood flow. However, Patel noted that narrowing is not always the most dangerous part.
Risk of Heart Attack and Stroke
He warned that a plaque can rupture, and the body treats this as an injury, leading to a rapid blood clot. Blocked blood flow to the heart can cause a heart attack, and to the brain, a stroke. Narrowed arteries in the legs can result in peripheral arterial disease.
Patel advised anyone who suspects they have high cholesterol to take immediate action rather than waiting for symptoms. He concluded: "Know your cholesterol numbers and know your cardiovascular risk."
How to Get Checked
The NHS states that high cholesterol does not usually cause symptoms, and a blood test is the only way to detect it. A GP might suggest a test based on age, weight, or existing conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes. If diagnosed, a doctor or nurse will discuss ways to lower cholesterol, such as dietary changes or medication. They may also assess the risk of a heart attack or stroke in the next 10 years, as lowering cholesterol can reduce that risk.
