New York City has identified cooling towers as a significant source of Legionnaires' disease outbreaks, leading to the implementation of stricter regulations aimed at preventing future cases.
Outbreak Investigation Findings
Health officials traced multiple outbreaks of the bacterial infection to cooling towers, which are part of large air-conditioning systems. The towers can harbor Legionella bacteria and spread it through aerosolized water droplets.
The investigation highlighted that poorly maintained towers were the primary culprits, with stagnant water and inadequate disinfection creating ideal conditions for bacterial growth.
New Regulatory Measures
