Donald Trump has sparked fresh health fears with a five-word comment after doctors sounded the alarm over his recent weight gain. The US President has been at the centre of mounting health speculation in recent months, with commentators pointing to his age, apparent memory loss and visible bodily bruising and swelling.
Weight gain since 2024 campaign
Concerns were fuelled further by reports that Mr Trump has gained 23 pounds, roughly 1.64 stone, since the 2024 election campaign. Doctors are said to have warned the leader, who is known for his love of McDonald's and Diet Coke, that weight gain is "a strong risk factor" for deteriorating health.
But Mr Trump seemingly brushed off the advice during an Oval Office appearance in the spring, where he said: "Maybe junk food is good."
President's dismissal of advice
Speaking in May, he added: "[Maybe] the other food is no good. I know many, many people that all they do is watch their weight, their this, their that, and they kicked the bucket, and here we are. I feel great."
Scott Kahan, director for the National Center for Weight and Wellness, told the Washington Post: "We know that obesity is a strong risk factor for numerous health issues - as well as premature disability and death. Addressing obesity to protect the president's health should be a priority similar to ensuring Secret Service protections for his life."
White House insists on 'perfect' health
The White House has remained insistent that Mr Trump is a specimen of "perfect" health, despite the numerous causes for conjecture.
Sean Barbarella, the president's physician, said in May: "President Trump remains in excellent health, demonstrating strong cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, and overall physical function. His demanding daily schedule, including multiple high-level meetings, public engagements, and regular physical activity, continues to support his overall well-being. Cognitive and physical performance are excellent. He is fully fit to carry out all duties of the Commander-in-Chief and Head of State."
