North Devon District Hospital is introducing a crash course for maternity staff after a review highlighted serious concerns, including a high rate of stillbirths and neonatal deaths. The move comes as part of an improvement plan following the Care Quality Commission's inspection.
Review findings
The review, carried out by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, found that the unit had a higher than average rate of stillbirths and neonatal deaths. It also identified issues with staffing levels and training.
The hospital said it was taking immediate action, including the introduction of a "maternity crash course" to refresh skills and improve teamwork. The course will involve simulations of emergency scenarios.
Trust response
The trust's chief executive said: "We are determined to make the necessary improvements and provide the safest possible care for mothers and babies."
The hospital is also increasing the number of midwives and obstetricians on duty and improving fetal monitoring.
Next steps
An action plan has been drawn up, with progress to be reviewed regularly. The CQC will carry out a follow-up inspection later this year.
