NHS Confirms Major Flu Vaccine Rollout for Over 65s from October 1
NHS Flu Vaccine Rollout for Over 65s Starts October 1

NHS England has confirmed a major flu vaccine rollout for adults aged 65 and over will begin on October 1, 2026, as part of the seasonal vaccination programme. The initiative targets the winter period when respiratory viruses, including flu, reach their peak circulation.

Why the October Start Date?

The decision to start the adult programme in October rather than earlier is based on evidence of waning vaccine effectiveness in adults. According to the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), vaccinating closer to peak flu activity—typically December or January—provides optimal protection during the highest risk period. Dr Thomas Waite, Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England, Dr Mary Ramsay of UKHSA, and Caroline Temmink of NHS England stated in a letter: “This start date is based on evidence of the waning of flu vaccine’s effectiveness in adults which means that it is preferable to vaccinate individuals closer to the time when the flu virus is likely to circulate.”

Who Is Eligible?

The October rollout covers adults aged 65 and over, as well as people aged 18 to 65 in clinical risk groups, those in long-stay residential care homes, carers receiving Carer’s Allowance, close contacts of immunocompromised individuals, and frontline social care workers. A separate rollout begins September 1 for pregnant women, children aged two or three on August 31, 2026, primary and secondary school-aged children, and all children in clinical risk groups from six months to under 18 years.

Children's Programme Starts Earlier

Children’s vaccination starts in September because flu circulation in children typically precedes that in adults. Protection from the vaccine also lasts longer in children, and an earlier start can reduce flu rates in older adults through indirect protection. The NHS expects most vaccinations to be completed by the end of November to ensure widespread protection before winter.

How to Get the Vaccine

The NHS will notify eligible individuals in autumn or winter about when and where to get their flu vaccine, either at a GP surgery or a participating pharmacy. The flu jab is free for those at higher risk of serious illness.
