A study suggests that attending a mid-life health MOT can significantly reduce the risk of dying early. The research, published in the British Journal of General Practice, analyzed data from more than 150,000 people in London between 2009 and 2023.
The NHS Health Check is a 20-minute appointment offered to people aged 40 to 74 to assess their risk of certain medical conditions. Researchers compared the mortality risk of 42,000 people who took up the offer with that of 116,000 who did not.
32% Lower Risk of Death
People who attended one or more checks were predicted to have a 32% reduced risk of dying after 10 years, compared with those who never attended. Older adults appeared to benefit most: those aged 65 to 69 saw a 43% reduced risk, and those aged 70 to 74 saw a 46% lower risk.
The authors wrote: “This study suggests significant long-term survival benefit associated with the NHS Health Check, supporting continued investment in and optimisation of the programme to provide population health benefits.”
What the Check Involves
The free assessment tells people whether they are at risk of conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, or stroke. Over-65s are also told about dementia symptoms, and women receive menopause advice. A health professional measures weight, height, and blood pressure, checks cholesterol, and asks about alcohol intake and physical activity.
Based on the results, people are given advice on exercise, smoking, diet (including salt intake), alcohol consumption, and improving cholesterol levels.
Who Is Eligible
Those aged 40 to 74 without a pre-existing health condition should be invited to an NHS Health Check by their GP or local council every five years. Anyone who has not been invited but thinks they are eligible should contact their GP practice to request a check.
