Musiala diagnosed with treatable absence seizures after collapse

Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala has been diagnosed with treatable absence seizures due to a neurological dysfunction, following his second collapse in pre-season. The 23-year-old German international fell to the ground during Tuesday's 4-2 friendly win over FC Heidenheim, just minutes after coming off the bench. He was led off the pitch by medical staff, with players from both sides forming a protective circle around him.

Recent Incidents

Musiala was also forced off against RB Leipzig last week, initially attributed to the sweltering heat in Munich. He came on as a substitute in the 71st minute, scored in the 81st, but went down moments later and was withdrawn in the 85th minute. Bayern chief Max Eberl said at the time: "The most important thing is that he is well. There's nothing more to say about anything else." Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer added: "It will become clear what it was. But of course we are keeping our fingers crossed."

Musiala's Statement

Taking to Instagram after Tuesday's incident, Musiala wrote: "First things first – I'm doing well! I'm especially grateful for your messages and support! I understand that many of you are worried. I'd like to alleviate those concerns today and explain something." He continued: "I've been diagnosed with temporary, brief, but easily treatable absence seizures, which are due to a neurological dysfunction. These can lead to the recent episodes, like the one against Leipzig or now in Heidenheim. I know they seem scary at first glance – but for me, they're currently just part of my everyday life. I'm receiving excellent medical treatment and am very optimistic. FC Bayern and my family and friends are always by my side and supporting me on this journey."

He added: "Importantly, there are no further health risks. In close consultation and regular communication with the experts, it was my personal wish to face this challenge and, with the clearance from the neurologists, to continue focusing on what helps me most in my recovery: simply living my daily life and pursuing my passion for playing football. I've taken responsibility for that. Overall, I have a very good feeling and I'm on the right track."

Career and Comeback

Musiala's latest setback comes after he missed the first six months of last season with a fractured ankle sustained at the Club World Cup. He recovered to join Germany's squad for the 2026 World Cup, where they were eliminated in the last 32 by Paraguay. Having joined Bayern from Chelsea in 2019, he has made 231 appearances, scoring 69 goals. He has also earned 46 caps for Germany, scoring ten goals, despite previously playing for England at youth level. His current contract runs until 2030. Bayern begin their season this weekend against Borussia Dortmund in the German Supercup, ahead of their opening league match against Stuttgart.
