The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has expanded its recall of semi-skimmed milk from Graham's Dairy Farm to include Scottish stores, after the initial alert only covered English shops. The milk was found to contain trace levels of vet medicines, including the antibiotic penicillin.
Affected Products and Stores
The affected bottles are one pint, one litre, and two litre sizes, all with a best before date of July 31, 2026. The farm, based in Bridge of Allan, supplies major retailers including Morrisons, Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Home Bargains, and SPAR.
Health Risks
The bottles have been withdrawn as they present a health risk for those with an allergy to penicillin. While general antibiotics can cause mild side effects like diarrhoea and nausea, a penicillin allergy can be life-threatening. Symptoms of a mild to moderate allergic reaction include a raised, itchy skin rash (urticaria or hives), coughing, wheezing, and tightness of the throat causing breathing difficulties.
Anaphylaxis Warning
In rare cases, consuming the affected milk could trigger anaphylaxis, a severe and life-threatening reaction requiring immediate medical attention. Symptoms include a skin rash with itchy, red, swollen, blistered or peeling skin, wheezing, tightness in the chest or throat, trouble breathing or talking, and swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue or throat. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should call 999 or go to A&E.
What to Do
Graham's Dairy Farm advises shoppers not to consume the affected milk and to return it to the store for a full refund. No other Graham's products are affected.
