Lionel Messi's family has confirmed that his father, Jorge, is experiencing a health issue but is 'progressing favourably' under medical care. The 68-year-old's condition remains unclear, and his loved ones have called for an end to speculation.

Messi's Emotional Response

Argentina began their World Cup title defense with a 3-0 victory over Algeria on Wednesday. Messi, playing in his sixth World Cup, scored a hat-trick but was seen wiping away tears after his opening goal in the 17th minute at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni also appeared emotional as he embraced Messi when he was substituted in the 80th minute. After the match, Messi said: 'Honestly, it's completely unrelated to the sport. I went through some difficult, complicated days. I'm grateful to the entire delegation, to my teammates. They gave me a lot of strength to get through this.'

Family Statement

Following increased speculation, the family issued a statement through ESPN, expressing displeasure at the lack of sensitivity and respect for their private matter. They stressed that only close family members have accurate information about Jorge's condition and that any other reports should not be considered valid.

'We ask for responsibility, prudence, and compassion,' the statement read. 'A person's health and the peace of mind of those around them should not be subject to speculation.' The family also thanked supporters for their concern and requested privacy during this time.

Jorge has played a central role in Messi's career, serving as his agent and business manager since his teens, and even coaching him at Grandoli before Messi joined Newell's Old Boys in 1995.

Argentina's next World Cup match is against Austria on June 22, followed by a Group J clash with Jordan on June 28.
