Jonny Butcher, a 29-year-old former insurance broker from Norwich, Norfolk, lost his ability to walk within two years of his first symptom—a shoulder pain that struck during his honeymoon in the Cotswolds. What he initially dismissed as a trapped nerve turned out to be amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a form of motor neurone disease (MND).
From Honeymoon to Diagnosis
Jonny married Ana, whom he met on the Mormon dating app Mutual in March 2023, on September 7, 2024. Just two days after the wedding, during their honeymoon, he felt a sharp pain in his left shoulder. "I rested it and the pain went away," Jonny recalled. Months later, tremors developed in his left hand, and his coordination began to fail. By January 2025, the couple had moved into a new flat, and Jonny noticed his tremors worsening with fatigue. Initially, doctors suspected functional neurological disorder (FND) after spinal and brain MRI scans came back clear. However, Jonny mentioned his uncle had MND, prompting further investigation.
Unable to access NHS testing promptly, the couple paid £3,000 for private tests. In February 2026, the results confirmed ALS. "A month after diagnosis, I was no longer able to walk, even with a walking stick," Jonny said. "Before diagnosis, I thought maybe I'd regain function. After, it hit me hard—realizing it won't get better, only worse."
Rapid Progression and Current Condition
Jonny now relies on a wheelchair and uses a breathing machine daily to prepare for anticipated lung deterioration. A recent respiratory test showed declining lung capacity. He is at stage three of five in ALS progression; stage five typically means fewer than 12 months to live.
Ana described the diagnosis as "like the floor opening beneath my feet. We fell into a very dark hole. But Jonny's positivity helps. He never complains." She added, "It's the cruellest disease. Your mind stays the same, but your body fades away. I'm watching him slip through my fingers."
Bucket List and Future Plans
The couple is ticking off items from Jonny's bucket list. They have visited Ana's family in Brazil, met all Norwich City FC players, and arranged a romantic trip to Lake Como, Italy, for July 2026. Jonny's symptoms began with a shoulder pain on his honeymoon, and within two years, he lost the ability to walk. He now faces an uncertain future as the disease advances.
