John Lewis Recalls 15 Products Over Asbestos Health Risk
John Lewis Recalls 15 Products Over Asbestos Risk

John Lewis has issued an urgent recall notice for 15 of its popular doorstops and draught excluders after identifying a serious health risk from potential asbestos contamination. The retailer is urging customers who have purchased these items to stop using them immediately and return them to stores for a full refund.

Products Sold Over Five-Year Period

The affected products were available for purchase from January 31, 2021, to June 11, 2026. The recall was published by the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) and will also be displayed in John Lewis stores. The list includes a variety of designs such as Duck, Elephant, Frog, Pig, Sausage Dog, Snowman, Gingerbread, Llama, and others, along with several draught excluders in navy, grey, and stripe patterns.

Health Risk from Asbestos Contamination

The OPSS stated: "The products present a risk to health as the marble chips sealed within the doorstops and excluders may be contaminated with a small quantity of asbestos. Asbestos is a banned substance because it poses a health risk even at low levels of exposure. The products do not meet the requirements of the General Product Safety Regulations 2005." Asbestos is known to cause serious lung damage and can even trigger cancer.

Immediate Action Required

The OPSS further advised: "We recommend owners stop using the products immediately and keep them out of reach of children." Customers are instructed to follow specific disposal guidance. If the product remains undamaged, it should be placed inside a heavy-duty plastic bag, double-taped, clearly labelled, and stored in a secure location away from children. If the item is damaged, clear areas where the filling has leaked using damp cloths and prevent dust from forming. Put on gloves and a mask before placing it in a double bag, together with the gloves, mask and cloths.

Refund and Disposal Instructions

Customers should take the item back to their nearest John Lewis branch for a full refund. If unable to reach a store, contact your local council for advice on safe asbestos disposal in your area. For additional information, visit John Lewis's website or telephone 03456 049 049. John Lewis stated: "We're very sorry that it has been necessary to recall this product, and for the inconvenience caused."
