John Lewis has issued an urgent recall for 15 of its popular door stops and draught excluders after discovering they may be contaminated with asbestos, a banned substance that poses a serious health risk even at low exposure levels. The retailer is urging customers to stop using the items immediately and return them to stores for a full refund.
The products were available for purchase between January 31, 2021, and June 11, 2026. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) published the recall notice, which is also displayed in John Lewis stores.
According to the OPSS, the marble chips sealed within the doorstops and excluders may be contaminated with a small quantity of asbestos. Asbestos is known to cause serious lung damage and can lead to cancer. The products do not meet the requirements of the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.
How to Handle the Recalled Items
Customers who own any of the recalled items should stop using them immediately and keep them out of reach of children. If the item remains undamaged, place it in a heavy-duty plastic bag, double-tape it, label it clearly, and store it securely away from children. If the item is damaged, clear areas where the filling has leaked using damp cloths and avoid creating dust. Put on gloves and a mask before placing the item, gloves, mask, and cloths in a double bag.
