Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was taken to hospital this week after experiencing acute heart failure while imprisoned at Rikers Island in Queens, New York. The 74-year-old is awaiting sentencing for his 2025 sexual assault conviction.
Sources indicated that Weinstein had been suffering from pneumonia when he developed heart failure. After struggling to breathe, he was transferred to Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward in Manhattan, where he remains under treatment. He is reportedly on the mend but not yet cleared for release.
Weinstein's Health History
Weinstein has a history of serious health issues. In 2024, he was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia, a form of bone marrow cancer. That same year, he was taken to the same hospital unit after what his lawyer described as an 'alarming' blood test result, attributed to a lack of adequate medical care and deplorable conditions at Rikers Island.
Legal Background
Weinstein has been at the centre of rape or sexual misconduct allegations from more than 100 individuals, with some claims dating back to the 1970s. These allegations sparked the Me Too movement, which highlighted sexual violence in the film industry and worldwide. He has denied all allegations. In 2020, he was handed a 23-year prison sentence, but this was overturned by the Court of Appeal in a shocking development.
Recent Court Statements
In early January, reports emerged that Weinstein was considering a guilty plea deal, describing prison as a 'death march'. He told the court earlier this year, 'I know I was unfaithful, I know I acted wrongly, but I never assaulted anyone.' He added, 'The isolation is unbearable. My body is failing,' describing Rikers jail, where he has been held for two years, as 'a slow march toward death'.
