A common bathroom item may be harboring harmful microorganisms without homeowners realizing it. The shared hand towel, used by multiple family members and guests, can trap microbes and mildew in its fibers.
How Towels Become Contaminated
Microorganisms from improperly washed hands or even normal skin contact can become trapped in towel fibers. Moisture from repeated use creates ideal conditions for microbial survival and growth. While the risk of a healthy person becoming ill from a household towel is generally low, sharing and slow drying increase opportunities for germs to transfer back onto hands.
Expert Recommendations for Towel Hygiene
Faz Salloo, Director of Bathroomfort, stated: "A hand towel can be used many times in a few hours, particularly in a busy family bathroom, so its washing schedule should reflect how damp and heavily used it becomes." He emphasized that daily replacement is sensible if someone in the home has vomiting or diarrhea, and that person should have a separate towel.
In normal circumstances, Salloo advises changing a shared hand towel regularly and sooner whenever it stays wet, smells, looks dirty, or has been used by many people.
Preventing Illness Spread
If a household member is unwell, they should have their own hand towel to prevent the spread of illness. Wash the sick person's towel daily until they recover. Additionally, ensure the hand towel dries after each use. Avoid leaving it crumpled on the floor, folded in on itself, or squeezed between other damp towels on a crowded rail.
Drying and Ventilation Tips
Salloo recommended: "Spread it out fully, run the extractor fan after washing and open a window where it is safe to do so. Warm, humid summer air and a poorly ventilated bathroom can leave fabric damp for longer than people expect."
Optimal Washing Practices
To keep your family healthy, wash bathroom hand towels at 40°C to 60°C to ensure proper cleaning. Change towels regularly and whenever they become soiled. Never share towels with someone who is ill, and ensure all towels dry completely between uses.
