German Stossluften trick clears condensation in 3 minutes

Condensation can be a persistent issue in many homes, but a clever trick from Germany could provide the solution. During colder spells, countless households find themselves battling water droplets forming on cold surfaces such as doors, walls and windows.

This condensation can lead to a range of problems, from mould and mildew to musty odours and health concerns. However, according to one window expert, the "Stossluften" technique can banish dampness from homes within minutes, significantly reducing the risk of mould taking hold.

What is Stossluften?

Experts at Ecoline Windows say that Stossluften, which translates as "shock ventilation", can be the answer. The technique involves opening several windows throughout a property for no longer than three minutes.

Matan Korin, the Vice President of Sales at the firm, explained previously: "This will create a draft, swapping most of the warm humid air inside the house with cold air from outside. As the fresh air's temperature rises, it takes up the extra humidity in the house."

This wasn't the only advice Matan had to offer. He put forward four additional suggestions to help tackle the issue.

Review Your Windows

Cold windows are particularly susceptible to condensation, so keeping them warm is advisable. Thermal curtains, window quilts, or a small space heater positioned nearby can all help.

Window insulation film is another effective, cheap and simple option, reducing heat transfer and condensation. If your windows are old or inefficient, you might also consider replacing them with newer, more efficient ones. Matan adds, "Double-glazed versions provide better insulation and reduce condensation".

Use a Dehumidifier

Keeping indoor humidity under control is essential when it comes to tackling window condensation. One way to keep tabs on moisture levels in your home is to purchase a hygrometer, a device designed to measure the humidity of the air.

Purchasing a reliable dehumidifier can help lower the amount of moisture present in the air throughout your home. Keeping humidity levels between 30% and 50% can go a long way towards reducing condensation.

Rearrange Furniture and Assess Plants

Condensation is far more likely to develop if your windows are blocked by furniture or thick curtains. Repositioning your furniture, or swapping out your curtains, can encourage air to flow more freely around your windows, helping to sustain a steadier temperature and cut down on condensation.

While houseplants can boost indoor air quality, having too many gathered in a single spot is best avoided. This is because they emit moisture through a natural process known as transpiration, meaning a large number of plants can push humidity levels higher, ultimately leading to condensation.

Position them thoughtfully around your home, and consider using a dehumidifier if you have a sizeable indoor garden, such as in a conservatory.
