Travellers are being urged to pack enough prescription medication for their entire trip, as UK prescriptions are not recognised in Portugal. All medicines must be kept in original packaging with pharmacy labels clearly visible.
Strict Rules on Certain Medicines
Portugal has strict rules on dispensing certain medicines, including antibiotics. Visitors needing repeat prescriptions must attend local health centres or hospital A&E departments, where they may face charges for treatment and medication.
Most medicines can only be obtained from Portuguese pharmacies, though some over-the-counter products are available in supermarket health stores.
Healthcare Cards and Coverage
Holidaymakers should carry a valid Global Health Insurance Card or European Health Insurance Card for access to state healthcare. However, these cards don't cover medical repatriation, private healthcare, or travel-related expenses.
The FCDO warns that changes to routine, hot weather and dietary differences can affect how medications work during travel.
