John Reay, 67, from Cramlington, faced the heartbreaking task of telling his four sons about his stage 4 cancer diagnosis earlier this year. Now, he is determined to support others in similar situations by taking part in a charity walk for Maggie's, an organisation that provides support to cancer patients and their families.
Devastating News Delivered to Family
In January, John sat down with his sons Josh, 25, Sam, 23, Ben, 21, and Jack, 14, to inform them he had cancer, though further tests were needed. Months later, after surgery to remove part of the tumour, the family—including his wife Kelly, 54—learned the cancer was stage 4 and had spread to several areas. The news came as a complete shock to everyone.
Eldest son Josh said: "It has been a lot to deal with for all of us, and we are all trying to support each other and our mum with it being such a difficult time. Things have gotten a bit better though, as we are over the initial shock, as you think 'that's it' when you heard the word cancer, but actually he's in a better situation than that."
Determination to Give Back
Despite the hardship, John is committed to participating in the “We Walk for Maggie’s” event, a four-mile charity walk from Spanish City in Whitley Bay to the Fish Quay at North Shields. The walk raises funds for Maggie’s, which has been a vital support for John and his family.
John works for Newcastle United in the Chairman's Suite and has long understood the impact of cancer, as several colleagues have been affected. His son Josh has been "blown away" by his father's selfless attitude. Josh added: "He is undergoing radiotherapy at the moment, and Maggie's have been a great support to him and the whole family, just giving us somewhere to go and talk to someone who has a similar experience. Wanting to do the walk just really came from there, and we are all very proud of him for how determined he is."
Fundraising Goal and Community Support
The family hopes to raise £2,000 through their GoFundMe page. At the time of writing, the total stood at £1,653, and they are delighted with the positive response. Josh said: "With Maggie's doing stuff for all of us, dad wants to help to raise money for them, and make the most of his time in the process. They have given him somewhere to go after his radiotherapy for a cup of tea and a chat, which I think he has found to be so helpful."
The family will walk together, and they encourage donations to help reach their goal. To donate, visit the GoFundMe page, and for more information about Maggie's, visit their website.
