Doctor warns toilet phone scrolling risks haemorrhoids and infections

Spending too long on the toilet, a habit often encouraged by bringing a phone into the bathroom, can have negative effects on health, according to Dr Amir Khan, who shared his advice in a TikTok video. The GP, known for appearing on ITV's Lorraine and Good Morning Britain, warned that extended bathroom visits could increase the risk of several conditions.

Risks of prolonged sitting

Dr Khan explained that a relaxed slouch position on the toilet puts extra pressure on rectal veins, which can increase the risk of haemorrhoids or worsen existing ones. He also said that sitting for extended periods on a hard toilet seat can reduce blood flow to the lower body, leading to numbness or tingling in the legs and, in the long run, an increased risk of varicose veins.

Straining for long periods can also weaken the pelvic floor muscles, leading to difficulty passing stool over time, he added. The doctor also highlighted that sitting too long can reduce blood flow to the legs, causing sweat and bacteria to build up, which can irritate hair follicles and lead to inflamed or infected ingrowing hairs on the backs of the legs.

Bacteria exposure and recommendations

Dr Khan noted that spending too long in a bathroom, especially a public one, can increase exposure to bacteria, particularly if someone is scrolling through a phone, as bacteria can get onto the phone, hands, or face. He recommended limiting toilet time to five to 10 minutes per visit and avoiding straining, suggesting that if nothing happens naturally, it is better to try again later.

He also advised using a footstool to elevate the feet, which can improve posture and make it easier to pass motions. Staying hydrated and active, keeping the phone out of the bathroom, and washing hands after every visit were additional recommendations.

Men's Health supports this guidance, stating that 10 to 15 minutes is the absolute maximum time to spend on the loo. The publication also says that focusing on a phone could make it harder to go to the toilet and result in constipation, advising people to only visit the bathroom when they actually need to go and not to strain, as this can lead to haemorrhoids. Anyone with concerns about their toilet habits is advised to consult their GP.
