Google has launched its Pixel 11 range in the UK, introducing a distinctive feature in the Pro and Pro XL models that neither Apple nor Samsung currently offer. The new HiLight function is an ambient LED light encircling the camera flash, designed to illuminate when a call arrives while the phone is face down.
HiLight's colour-coded notifications
The key innovation of HiLight lies in its customisable colour-coded system, allowing users to assign different colours to specific contacts. For instance, one colour can be designated for a parent and another for a partner, so when the LED glows in a particular shade, it's immediately clear who is calling without needing to check the screen.
This enables users to decide whether to answer the call or let it ring through to voicemail, all without picking up the device. Beyond call alerts, HiLight integrates with Google's AI assistant Gemini, illuminating whenever Gemini is active during hands-free requests such as sending a text, playing a song, or asking a question.
Pricing and trade-in deals
The Pixel 11 series, unveiled on August 20, includes four handsets: the standard model, a new foldable device, and the Pro and Pro XL. Prices for the 256GB Pro and Pro XL begin at £1,079 and £1,279 respectively. However, with Google's trade-in offer, these can be reduced to £229 and £429, depending on the device handed over.
Google is offering up to £850 off when ordering before Tuesday, September 1, which includes a £400 bonus on top of the standard trade-in value. The full £850 discount is based on trading in an iPhone 16 Pro 1TB, so other handsets may receive a lower value. The deal also includes six months of Google AI Pro and three months of YouTube Premium, worth a combined £152.

TechRadar reviewed the Pixel 11 series before release and described HiLight as 'the surprising standout'. The review noted that flipping a Pixel face down has traditionally been a way to disconnect, but HiLight offers a way to stay disconnected while still knowing when something important is happening, calling it 'the clearest and smartest implementation' of a notification light.
TechRadar acknowledged that HiLight's capabilities are 'relatively limited' at launch but praised it for adding 'flair' to the Pro models, which feature better displays and cameras. For those purchasing outright, the handsets come unlocked, and Giffgaff is offering an 18-month unlimited SIM for £14 (was £25) or a monthly-rolling unlimited SIM for £20 (was £35). Alternatively, Mobiles.co.uk is giving away Pixel Buds Pro 2 with a 24-month contract on iD Mobile's £29.99 per month tariff with £129 upfront for the Pro, or £35.99 monthly with £129 upfront for the Pro XL.
