Taking a phone into the bathroom could be doing more harm than good, according to a doctor who has warned that spending too long on the toilet can lead to a number of health conditions.
Dr Amir Khan, known for appearances on ITV's Lorraine and Good Morning Britain, shared his advice in a video on TikTok. He highlighted how the duration of bathroom visits could have a greater impact than many people expect.
Risks of prolonged sitting
Dr Khan said: "Do you know someone who spends far too long on the toilet? I think we all do. Well, send them this video to see if it gets them out quicker. Sitting on the toilet for too long can have negative effects on your health, even if it seems fairly harmless."
He explained that a relaxed slouch position puts extra pressure on rectal veins, increasing the risk of haemorrhoids or worsening existing ones. He also noted that sitting for extended periods on a hard toilet seat can reduce blood flow to the lower body, leading to numbness or tingling in the legs and, in the long run, increasing the risk of varicose veins.
Straining and bacterial exposure
Straining for long periods can weaken pelvic floor muscles, making it harder to pass stool over time. Dr Khan also warned that sitting for too long can reduce blood flow to the legs, causing sweat and bacteria to build up and irritate hair follicles, which can lead to inflamed or infected ingrowing hairs.
He added that spending too long in a bathroom, especially a public one, can increase exposure to bacteria, particularly when scrolling on a phone, as bacteria can transfer to the phone, hands, or face.
Practical advice
Dr Khan advised limiting toilet time to five to 10 minutes per visit, avoiding straining, and trying again later if nothing happens naturally. He suggested using a footstool to elevate the feet, which can improve posture and make it easier to pass motions. He also recommended staying hydrated, staying active, keeping phones out of the bathroom, and washing hands after every visit.
Men's Health supports this guidance, stating that 10 to 15 minutes is the absolute maximum time to spend on the loo. It also notes that focusing on a phone can make it harder to go to the toilet and may result in constipation. Anyone with concerns about their toilet habits is advised to consult their GP.
