The UK is experiencing its third heatwave of the year, with high temperatures expected to last until Saturday. While many focus on staying cool and protecting their skin, Dr Jas Sagoo, a leading general and cosmetic dentist at Perfect Smile Spa, warns that the hot weather poses several oral health risks.
How Heat Affects Teeth
Dr Sagoo explains that hot weather can cause the inner layer of dentin and outer layer of enamel to expand slightly, leading to increased sensitivity, nerve pain, or even small cracks in teeth. He advises being mindful of these changes and taking preventive measures.
Dehydration and Dry Mouth
Dehydration is common during heatwaves and can result in a dry mouth, which increases the risk of plaque buildup, tooth decay, gum disease, and infections. To combat this, Dr Sagoo recommends drinking plenty of water to replace fluids lost through sweating and to keep the mouth hydrated. Adequate hydration also supports saliva production, which helps wash away food particles and bacteria.
Expert Advice
Dr Sagoo stated: "Hot weather can pose a range of health risks and it's important to know how best to protect ourselves during heatwaves. It is easy to underestimate the impact heatwaves can have on our teeth, and the link between the two may not always be obvious." He added: "Maintaining good oral health habits to protect your teeth and gums should be a priority no matter the weather."
He also cautioned that consuming chilled drinks and cold treats like ice cream may increase tooth sensitivity. To mitigate this, he suggests limiting acidic or sugary foods and drinks and using toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth.
Year-Round Oral Hygiene
Dr Sagoo emphasizes that good oral hygiene is essential all year, including brushing twice a day for two minutes each time and flossing daily. He concludes: "Drinking plenty of water is an easy and refreshing way to protect our teeth, gums and our bodies in general during a heatwave."
