The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has reported a sharp rise in cyclospora infections among people who have travelled to Mexico. A total of 67 cases have been recorded across the UK between April 30 and July 15.
Cyclospora Cases Surge in UK
Cyclospora is a parasite that causes explosive diarrhoea. Contaminated food, particularly herbs, salad and soft fruit, are common sources of outbreaks and infections. Infection is acquired through consumption of contaminated food.
Symptoms and Transmission
The parasite does not naturally occur in the UK and there is no risk of person-to-person spread. Health officials are advising travellers to Mexico to be cautious about food and water hygiene.
