A one-year-old girl has died after a suspected hazardous chemicals incident at a flat in Newham, east London. Emergency services were called to a property on Barking Road, Upton Park, on Tuesday afternoon after two adults and two children attended hospital complaining of a chemical smell.
The infant later died in hospital, and police believe she came into contact with chemicals. A 41-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman, who are not known to the victim, have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and remain in custody.
London Fire Brigade evacuated around 12 people from neighbouring properties as a precaution. Specially trained firefighters conducted a systematic sweep of the affected flat to detect hazardous materials and ventilate the scene.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the girl's next of kin are being supported by specialist officers. The incident is not believed to be terror-related, and an investigation is ongoing.
