Beetroot is one of the most underrated foods for heart health, according to cardiologist Dr Francesco Lo Monaco, founder of the National Heart Clinic on Harley Street. He explains that this simple vegetable works on the cardiovascular system in remarkable ways.
How Beetroot Benefits the Heart
Dr Lo Monaco states: “Beetroot is rich in natural nitrates, which the body converts into nitric oxide, a molecule that tells your blood vessels to relax.” This leads to better circulation, lower blood pressure, and a healthier endothelium—the inner lining of blood vessels. He adds: “Beetroot helps your arteries stay elastic, something medications alone can't always achieve.”
Improved Oxygen Delivery and Recovery
Beetroot's circulation-boosting qualities also help deliver more oxygen to muscles, including the heart, improving energy levels and cardiovascular performance. There is also a lesser-known recovery benefit: “Beetroot can reduce the damage caused when blood flow returns to the heart after being temporarily restricted,” Dr Lo Monaco says.
Benefits for Existing Health Conditions
For people managing conditions like hypertension, diabetes, inflammation, or high homocysteine, beetroot supports many of the dysfunctional pathways involved. The benefits extend beyond the heart—research indicates positive effects on brain blood flow, particularly relevant for women, as vascular changes accelerate after menopause.
Easy to Incorporate into Diet
Beetroot retains most of its benefits whether raw, roasted, or vacuum-packed from the supermarket. Dr Lo Monaco suggests adding a few servings to weekly meals. He notes it won't replace prescription medication but is a simple, affordable way to support heart health: “Beetroot actively supports vascular repair, arterial youth, and heart performance in ways most people never hear about. Making small changes such as this is how you improve retention and longevity.”
