British Dad in Coma in Thai Hospital After Sepsis on Holiday

Fraser Derbyshire, a 35-year-old British father, is fighting for his life in a coma at a Thai hospital after collapsing suddenly in his hotel room during a dream holiday. He was found unresponsive at Cross Hotel and Resorts in Bangkok on Thursday, July 9, and rushed to Sikarin Hospital. Doctors have diagnosed him with sepsis and an infection on one of his heart valves.

Undiagnosed Infection Spreads to Brain

According to his family, Fraser had an undiagnosed infection in his heart that spread to his brain. The cause of the infection remains unknown, but they believe it could have started from something as simple as a cut or an insect bite. Fraser, from Sheffield, South Yorkshire, had traveled to Thailand with a friend just hours before his collapse and was otherwise fit and healthy.

Urgent Need for Open-Heart Surgery

Fraser now urgently requires open-heart surgery before he can be brought home to his four-year-old daughter, Poppy. His cousin, Leanne Derbyshire, stated: "While on holiday in Thailand, Fraser was found unconscious in his hotel room and was rushed to Sikarin Hospital in Bangkok. He is currently in a coma and on a ventilator after developing sepsis affecting his brain due to an undiagnosed medical condition." She added that Fraser does not have medical insurance, leaving the family facing overwhelming medical costs. The surgery alone will cost £11,000, in addition to significant expenses already incurred.

Fundraiser Launched to Cover Costs

Leanne launched an online fundraiser within hours of the incident, raising more than £6,000 in just under a week. However, the family fears the final bill could be far higher as Fraser's treatment continues. Leanne said: "He knows a lot of people and there's a lot of people out there who are obviously rooting for him and really want to get him home to his daughter." She described Fraser as a "devoted young father" whose loved ones are determined to get him back to his daughter.

Parents at Bedside

Fraser's heartbroken parents flew 12 hours from the UK to be with him and remain at his bedside in Thailand, waiting anxiously for news. Leanne added: "They said that he obviously looks really unwell. When they arrived and actually spoke to him he moved his eyes slightly, so we're all obviously taking that as a positive because he was unresponsive."
