Kitchen Ingredient Eliminates Washing Machine Odours
Washing machines can develop unpleasant smells over time due to detergent residue, moisture and bacteria buildup. Consumer organisation Which? warns that low-temperature washes and excessive detergent use contribute to the problem by allowing residue to accumulate inside the drum, rubber door seal and detergent drawer.
Cleaning experts at Whirlpool recommend using white vinegar as a simple, inexpensive solution. Its acidic properties help dissolve residue and freshen the appliance. According to Whirlpool, homeowners should pour around two cups of white vinegar directly into the drum and run an empty hot wash at 60°C or above. After the cycle finishes, wiping the rubber door seal, detergent drawer and inside of the door removes any remaining residue.
Regular Maintenance Prevents Mould and Bacteria
Which? advises carrying out a maintenance clean roughly once a month, especially for those who frequently wash clothes at lower temperatures. The Good Housekeeping Institute recommends leaving the washing machine door and detergent drawer slightly open after each cycle to allow moisture to escape, reducing damp conditions that encourage mould and mildew growth. Drying the rubber seal after use also prevents lingering moisture.
Bosch Home Appliances suggests cleaning the machine's filter every few months, as lint, hair and other debris can collect inside and contribute to unpleasant smells while affecting performance.
Avoid Excess Detergent
Cleaning specialists warn against using more detergent than necessary. Which? states that excess detergent may not rinse away completely, leaving residue that traps bacteria and creates odours. While white vinegar is widely recommended for occasional cleaning, some manufacturers advise checking the appliance handbook first. Bosch says acidic cleaning products should only be used in line with manufacturer guidance, as frequent use may not be suitable for every washing machine.
Regular maintenance, including cleaning seals and filters, leaving the door ajar after washes, and running an occasional maintenance cycle with white vinegar, can help keep washing machines smelling fresh and performing efficiently for longer, according to Which?.
