White vinegar, not lemons, is the superior kitchen ingredient for descaling kettles, according to cleaning expert Christy (@christyytiktok). In a recent TikTok video, she demonstrated a simple method using equal parts white vinegar and water to dissolve limescale, also known as calcium carbonate.
How to Descale a Kettle with Vinegar
To descale a kettle, pour equal amounts of water and white vinegar into the appliance, then boil it. The acetic acid in vinegar reacts with the alkaline calcium and magnesium compounds in limescale, breaking down the mineral crust without damaging the kettle's interior. Depending on the thickness of the limescale, the process may need to be repeated several times. Once the limescale has dissolved, pour away any remaining bits and rinse the kettle thoroughly.
Why Vinegar Works Best
Just Descaler explains that vinegar is an eco-friendly option that safely dissolves mineral build-up without harsh chemicals. It is safe to use around children and pets. The experts at Good Food tested the method and found it “proved very effective and doesn’t require much time investment and is free of harmful chemicals.” They boiled the vinegar and water four times, noting that while the kettle did not return to a “like new” appearance, all hard limescale was removed. One drawback is that it can be tricky to remove scale from the kettle spout, and neat vinegar may irritate sensitive skin, so wearing rubber gloves is recommended.
Impact on Kettle Efficiency
Limescale build-up not only affects the taste and quality of water but also reduces the appliance's efficiency. Hard water, which contains high levels of calcium and magnesium, leaves behind chalky white deposits when heated. Using vinegar as a descaler can restore efficiency without resorting to harsh chemical cleaners.
