Veterinary surgeon Amir Anwary, known as @Amirthevet on TikTok, has issued a health warning for owners of large dog breeds, including Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Boerboels, Bullmastiffs, and Rottweilers. In a video that has garnered significant attention, Anwary recounted a tragic case where he had to euthanise a Labrador that was otherwise healthy but could no longer stand due to severe arthritis.
Arthritis Risk in Large Breeds
Anwary explained that large breed dogs are at higher risk of developing arthritis as they age because of their significant weight, which puts extra pressure on their joints. He noted that this condition is a common reason for euthanasia in such dogs. "I see this so, so, so often with large breed dogs that the reason they have to be put down is because their joints are simply not functional any more," he said.
How Joints Deteriorate
According to Anwary, joints are constantly in a state of building up and breaking down. In young puppies, these processes occur at the same pace, keeping joints healthy. However, as dogs age, the breakdown accelerates while the buildup slows, leading to arthritis. "This difference is what will eventually lead to arthritis," he warned.
Preventive Measures
To protect joints while dogs are still young, Anwary recommended a combination of two supplements: a high-quality Omega-3 supplement, which acts as a natural anti-inflammatory to reduce joint breakdown, and a comprehensive joint supplement containing glucosamine, chondroitin, and collagen. These ingredients promote joint cartilage buildup. "When you supplement with both of these things, you're promoting the build-up and decreasing the breakdown, and this is what puts your dog's joints in balance," he advised.
Anwary emphasised that many owners make the mistake of not protecting their dog's joints early enough. He urged owners to start supplementation while their dogs are still young to prevent arthritis later in life.
