James Norton, best known for his role in Happy Valley, has been widely praised for completing his first London Marathon, raising an impressive £132,000 for a charity close to his heart. The 40-year-old actor finished the 26.2-mile course in a commendable four hours and 29 minutes, despite battling a chest infection.
Personal Cause Drives Marathon Effort
Norton was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 18 years ago, a condition that also affects his mother and sister. The actor ran to raise funds for Breakthrough TD1, a charity dedicated to supporting young diabetics and funding research toward a cure. Speaking about the experience, Norton described it as a 'mad and beautiful experience,' acknowledging the 'gruelling' nature of the race.
After crossing the finish line, Norton shared a photo on Instagram showing his medal, along with his G7 glucose monitor and Omnipod insulin pump, which he wears continuously. He wrote: 'Did it. Just. Had a chest infection which made it pretty gruelling, but the incredible support from the crowds carried me to the finish line.'
Fundraising Success and Community Support
The actor's JustGiving page, boosted by a generous donation from the Bukhman Foundation, has raised over £132,000. Norton expressed heartfelt thanks to donors, emphasising that the money will help young diabetics across the country and bring the diabetes community closer to a cure.
Norton also shared a touching photo of six-year-old Emma, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age two, admiring his medal. He thanked the companies behind his glucose monitor and insulin pump, noting that these devices were crucial in keeping his glucose levels stable during the marathon.
Celebrity Support and Awareness
Fans and fellow celebrities congratulated Norton on his achievement, with many commending him for raising awareness about type 1 diabetes. One follower said the actor had brought 'incredible awareness' to the diabetic community. Norton's post-race message ended with a note of solidarity: 'Love to all my fellow T1D warriors out there.
