Jesy Nelson's Daughter Says First Word After Rare Diagnosis

Jesy Nelson has shared a heartwarming update about her daughter's development, just months after revealing her twins were diagnosed with a rare condition. The former Little Mix singer, 34, posted a video on her Instagram story showing her 11-month-old daughter Story saying 'Muma' for the first time.

First Word Milestone

'Story said Muma for the first time my life is complete,' Jesy captioned the video, which showed the baby lying under a blanket and looking up at her mother while speaking. The singer welcomed twins Ocean Jade and Story Monroe Nelson-Foster in May last year with her former fiancé, musician Zion Foster, 27. The couple has since split.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy Diagnosis

In January, Jesy revealed that both her daughters had been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 (SMA1), a rare genetic condition that causes progressive muscle weakness and can affect walking and breathing. She shared at the time that doctors told her the girls might never be able to walk. 'We were told they were never going to be able to walk. They would probably never regain their neck strength. They will be disabled. The best thing we can do right now is to get them treatment and hope for the best,' she said.

Treatment and Challenges

Jesy expressed gratitude that her daughters received treatment, noting that without it, they would not survive. In March, she revealed the girls had to wear splints because their feet were pointing and needed to be flattened. 'It made me really sad. Have you ever seen anything cuter in your life? Made me sad though, because it's just another reminder,' she wrote.

There is currently no cure for SMA, but treatments and support are available. The condition occurs when both parents carry a faulty gene; one in 40 people is a carrier. Since announcing the diagnosis, Jesy has been campaigning for the NHS to introduce newborn testing for SMA1, as earlier diagnosis could improve outcomes.

Earlier this month, Jesy's car, along with vital medical equipment, was stolen from her driveway. The twins require round-the-clock care.
