The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a stark warning to the public as cases of a highly contagious virus surge across the country. With winter firmly setting in, health officials are urging people to recognise the signs of norovirus and take immediate action to prevent its spread.
Recognising the 'Winter Vomiting Bug'
The primary symptoms of norovirus are vomiting, nausea, and diarrhoea. However, the illness can also present with a high temperature, headaches, body aches, and stomach pain. The UKHSA emphasises that this virus spreads with alarming ease, contributing to the high number of people currently unwell and adding pressure to hospital services already dealing with seasonal flu.
The Critical 48-Hour Rule
Official guidance is clear: anyone experiencing symptoms must stay at home. You should remain home for at least 48 hours after your symptoms have completely stopped. This advice is echoed by NHS inform in Scotland, which states individuals should stay off work or school for the same period.
Furthermore, you must avoid visiting hospitals or care homes to protect vulnerable people. If you contract the virus, rest and drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Crucially, do not prepare food for others until 48 hours after you recover, as norovirus can be transmitted through contaminated food.
How to Stop the Spread
Health experts warn that norovirus can survive on surfaces for days or even weeks, which is a major factor in its rapid transmission. Alcohol-based hand sanitisers are ineffective against it. The UKHSA provides specific cleaning advice:
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water, especially after using the toilet and before handling food.
- Use a bleach-based disinfectant for surfaces. The agency recommends a 0.1% sodium hypochlorite solution (1,000 ppm).
- Wear disposable gloves during cleaning if possible.
- Thoroughly clean, wash, or disinfect any contaminated items, including clothes, bedding, toilets, taps, and door handles.
The UKHSA reinforced its message on social media platform X, stating plainly: "The virus spreads easily and you should stay home for 48 hours after symptoms stop." Adhering to this advice is the most effective way to protect yourself and others during this winter outbreak.
